How to choose an AI-visibility tool.

AI brand monitoring is a new category and the tools differ a lot. Here's what actually matters when you choose one — vendor-neutral.

What is AI visibility (GEO)?

AI visibility — often called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — is how often, and how favourably, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity mention and recommend your brand when people ask them buying questions. As more buyers ask an assistant instead of a search engine, the answer it gives becomes a channel of its own.

The core question: when a potential customer asks an AI assistant "which brand would you recommend?", does it name you — and if not, who does it name instead?

What to check before you choose

1. Which AI models are covered

Buyers don't all use the same assistant. A tool that only watches one model gives you a blind spot. Look for coverage across the models your market actually uses — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and ideally Claude and Grok.

2. Monitoring, or also optimization

Many tools stop at "here's your mention count." That tells you there's a problem, not what to do about it. The more useful tools add concrete recommendations, a website AI-readiness audit, and a view of the sources that shape answers.

3. Language & market

AI answers differ by language and country. If you sell in specific markets, make sure the tool measures in those languages and markets — not just in English for the US.

4. Connection to business results

A visibility score is only useful if you can tie it to demand. Tools that connect to your Google Search & Analytics data let you see where AI momentum turns into traffic, leads and revenue.

5. Sentiment & context

Being mentioned isn't always good. Check whether the tool reads how you're described — the sentiment and framing — and whether it flags inaccurate claims the model makes about you.

6. Price & scope

Prices range from a few tens of euros to enterprise contracts in the hundreds or thousands. Match the scope — prompts, markets, models, seats — to your needs, and watch for which models (especially Claude) are gated to the most expensive tier.

7. A real free trial

You should be able to see a tool's output on your own brand before you pay. A free initial analysis is the fastest way to judge whether the signal is useful and accurate for you.

Before you decide, check:

  • Does it cover the AI models your buyers actually use?
  • Does it tell you what to do — not just what's happening?
  • Does it measure in your language and market?
  • Can it connect the AI signal to traffic and revenue?
  • Does it read sentiment and flag inaccurate claims?
  • Does the price and scope fit your stage — without gating key models?
  • Can you try it on your own brand for free first?
